Electromyography

What is Electromyography (EEG)?

An EEG study records the brain’s electrical activity using electrodes placed on the scalp. It helps detect abnormal brain function and is often used to diagnose conditions like epilepsy, sleep disorders, and brain injuries.

EEG are useful in the diagnosis of:

Epilepsy and seizure disorders

Detects abnormal brain waves that help identify seizure types and their origin.

Sleep disorders

Records brain activity during sleep to diagnose conditions like insomnia or narcolepsy.

Brain tumors

Reveals abnormal electrical patterns caused by tumors affecting brain function.

Head injuries

Assesses brain activity changes after trauma to evaluate possible complications.

Encephalitis

Shows abnormal slowing or spikes linked to inflammation in the brain tissue.

Stroke

Helps detect brain dysfunction or seizures following a stroke event.

Dementia and degenerative brain conditions

Identifies brain wave slowing common in Alzheimer’s and similar disorders.

Brain death

Confirms absence of brain activity to support diagnosis of brain death.

BENEFITS

Benefits of Electroencephalogram (EEG)

An EEG is a safe, non-invasive test that records brain activity. It offers real-time monitoring, is cost-effective, and supports early detection of neurological disorders like epilepsy.

Non-invasive and painless

Uses surface electrodes, causing no discomfort during the procedure.

Real-time brain activity monitoring

Captures ongoing electrical activity for immediate analysis.

Early detection of neurological disorders

Helps identify issues like epilepsy or encephalopathy early on.

What happens during EEG?

During an EEG, small metal discs called electrodes are placed on your scalp using a special paste or cap. These electrodes detect the electrical activity of your brain. You’ll be asked to relax and stay still, either lying down or sitting in a chair. The test is painless and usually lasts 20 to 40 minutes, though some may take longer.

How do I prepare for the EEG?

An EEG is a straightforward and non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the brain. To ensure accurate results, it's important to prepare in advance. Here are three key points to help you prepare:

Clean your hair

Wash your hair before the test to remove any oils or hair products that could affect electrode placement.

void caffeine and stimulants

Refrain from consuming caffeine for at least 12 hours before the EEG, as it can alter brain wave patterns.

Stay relaxed and bring necessary medications

Wear comfortable clothes and bring any prescribed medications, but inform the technician of your current treatments.

Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) & Electromyography (EMG)

A Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) assess nerve and muscle function. NCS measures nerve signal speed, while EMG evaluates muscle activity, helping diagnose nerve, muscle, and spinal conditions.

Botoxulium Treatment

Botulinum toxin treatment is a medical therapy that blocks nerve signals to muscles, reducing excessive activity. It is commonly used to treat chronic migraines, muscle spasms, and certain neurological conditions by providing long-lasting relief.
